Families turned out in force for the official opening of the Lincoln BIG Ice Rink in City Square, determined to make the most of one of the city’s most popular Christmas-time crowd-pullers.

The launch was performed by Lincoln Mayor Councillor Yvonne Bodger, who was accompanied by her Consort Gerry Gladwell, the City Sheriff Hilary Willerton and her Consort Michael Willerton.

After the ribbon-cutting ceremony, watching families enjoyed a sparkling demonstration by students of Kelly Hemingway, Director of the Skate Like the Wind School of Excellence, before taking to the ice themselves.

Lincoln BIG Events & Promotions Manager Michael Armstrong said: “It was a fabulous opening day at the ice rink.  No-one was going to wait for the mercury to fall when we had our very own Winter Wonderland in the heart of the city. Everyone had a great time.

“The ice rink always adds extra sparkle to the festive period and it got off to a great start. We are encouraging other people to book their sessions and make the most of this attraction, which will stay in place right up until January 1.”

Colleague Events Assistant Jess Wickham said: “We’ve got 45 minute sessions and deals to suit every member of the family.  Scores of school groups have already booked their sessions, as well as many family groups and individuals.

“We’ve also had our first corporate group booking and we would encourage more firms to consider the ice rink, as an unusual festive “works outing” too.

“We would like to remind people that we that we offer dedicated family and quiet sessions for young families and skaters with disabilities on Tuesdays at 10am and on Thursdays at 1pm.”

Tickets for these sessions can be bought at the ticket office at the ice rink. The ice rink will be open daily from 10am to 9pm, closing on Christmas Day. It will operate from 11am to 5pm on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Lincoln’s packed programme of Christmas festivities is gathering momentum and there is something for everyone to enjoy, from the city’s world famous Lincoln Christmas Market (Dec 1 to 4) to carol concerts, the Santa Fun Run & Walk (Dec 11) and unmissable pantomimes, including Cinderella at the New Theatre Royal Lincoln (Dec 5 to Jan 8) and Beauty & The Beast at Lincoln Drill Hall (Dec 4 to Jan 3).
