The United Kingdom Steampunk Convivial is heading back to the city for the sixth time and  the retro-futurist extravaganza, which kicks off on Friday (September 12) and runs until (September 14), promises to be bigger and better than ever.

Lincoln BIG Events & Promotions Manager Michael Armstrong said: “This is an important occasion in our events calendar and one which brings thousands of extra people into the city.

“The programme for the weekend is bursting at the seams with all manner of arts, literature, music, fashion and comedy events, all with a unique twist.”

Co-organiser Karen Grover said: “Last year we sold 1,800 tickets for events and we have already topped 2,000. What makes Lincoln so attractive is the general ambience of the Uphill area and the friendliness of the people.”

Serious steampunks, with their Victorian-style outfits, top hats, brass goggles and other  eyecatching accessories, will be unmissable on the city’s streets and out to make the most of a flamboyant and action-packed break.

Events taking place over the weekend, will mainly be centred around  The Assembly Rooms (Bailgate), Lincoln Castle, Bishop Grosseteste University College and the Westgate Academy.

The packed programme includes:

  • Friday: September 12 4pm – The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party in The Assembly Rooms – which offers steampunks a great opportunity to catch-up with old friends and make new acquaintances.
At 7.30pm (same venue) it will be time for Lady Elsie’s Fashion Gala, which kickstarts an evening featuring cocktails, a catwalk show and the chance to dance the night away.
From 8pm until late, revellers can also attend The Asylum Friday Night Bucket Gig at the Westgate Academy. It is being headlined by Brass Zepplin.
Alternatively, and also from 8pm until late, there is the temptation of The Majors Soiree, which promises music, comedy and mayhem, when it returns to the stage at The Venue theatre at Bishop Grosseteste University College.
  • Saturday: September 13 Saturday at 1pm sees the first of a double dose of Tea Duelling sessions when The Asylum VI Championship takes place in the Assembly Rooms. The “top biscuit dunker” goes on to do battle in the national championships the next day.
From 10am until 5pm there will be an Open Air Market in Castle Hill, giving shoppers a great opportunity to browse a range of stalls and, hopefully pick up a bargain or two. (Those who can’t make it should not despair, the market will be trading again on Sunday (Sept 14), from 10am to 4pm.)
At 4pm, steampunks will be hoping to make a great impression, and win medals, at their Costume Parade and Competition in The Assembly Rooms.
  • Sunday: September 14 At 1pm at Lincoln Castle, with gloves and elbow-pads at the ready, steampunks will be showing off their creativity and challenging each other in The Wacky Races.
At 2pm – the second Tea Duelling session of the weekend gets underway in the Assembly Rooms, where everyone will be eagerly cheering on their favourite contenders who are vying for top honours in the UK National Finals of Tea Duelling.
