Weekly Update 1
19th January 2026
Current Progress:
Works are due to commence on Monday 19th January 2026. Below is important information regarding traffic management, parking and deliveries over the first phase of the works.
Phase 1: Westgate to Eastgate w/c 19th January to 6th February
Traffic Manangement:
- Bailgate carriageway closed between Westgate and Eastgate
- Access maintained between Coffee by the Arch and Prince of Wales, then onto Westgate
- Parking bays open between Coffee by the Arch and the County Assembly Rooms
- No parking permitted between Westgate and The White Hart Hotel
- No parking permitted along Eastgate
- Diversion route via Newport/Church Lane to Northgate, near The Lincoln Hotel
- Pedestrian access shall be unaffected.
The area closed is show red on the plan here.
Concerns have been shared about bin collections, therefore on bin collection days if the bins are put out for collection as they usually would be, the site team will move the bins to the collection area which is marked in blue on the picture above. Once the bins have been emptied the site team will move the bins back to where they were presented. Please could all businesses who use Biffa or Veolia bin collections clearly label their bins with their name of business and address before the 19th of January. This will assist the site team with returning your bins to the correct location following collections.
Parking
There will be 32 on-street parking spaces open next week along Bailgate. The bays along Bailgate from Westgate to Eastgate will be closed until 6th February.
Please note that all of the nearby carparks remain open throughout the project.

Please note that access to the Methodist Church carpark will be unavailable from 7am on Monday 9th March until Thursday 12th March, to allow the contractor to complete the works in the access.
